Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG ( formally Schwarz Unternehmens Treuhand KG) is a German global discount supermarket chain, based in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe. It belongs to the holding company Schwarz Gruppe, which also owns the store chains Handelshofand hypermarket Kaufland. Lidl is the chief competitor of the similar German discount chain Aldi.
The first Dutch Lidl store was opened in Uden ( Noord-Brabant) in 1997. Lidl had 379 branches at the end of 2014. Lidl Netherlands presents itself with the motto always wanted to be the best and wants to offer “the highest quality for the lowest price.” Several times Lidl tested best in fruits and vegetables.
